Tarivid is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic containing ofloxacin (originally developed by Sanofi/Daiichi Sankyo). It exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. Tarivid offers high oral bioavailability and extensive tissue distribution, making it effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive aerobic bacteria, as well as atypical pathogens.
Primary Medical Indications
Tarivid is prescribed for adults to treat mild to severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
-
Urinary Tract & Genital Infections: Uncomplicated and complicated cystitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis, cervicitis, and uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
-

Safety Guidelines & Critical Precautions
-
Fluoroquinolone Boxed Warning: Like other fluoroquinolones, Tarivid carries warnings regarding severe and potentially irreversible adverse reactions, including tendonitis, tendon rupture (especially the Achilles tendon), peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system toxicities.
-
Chelation & Absorption Interactions: Divalent and trivalent cations bind to ofloxacin and significantly reduce its absorption. Do not take Tarivid within 2 hours before or after taking antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, sucralfate, iron supplements, or zinc-containing multivitamins.
-
Central Nervous System Cautions: Use with caution in patients with known CNS disorders, such as epilepsy or a lowered seizure threshold.
-
Phototoxicity: Tarivid can cause photosensitivity. Patients should avoid direct sunlight, sunlamps, and UV light exposure during treatment.
