Ornilox is a broad-spectrum, dual-action combination anti-infective medication containing ofloxacin and ornidazole. It is formulated to eradicate polymicrobial infections by targeting aerobic bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, and protozoal parasites simultaneously:

  • Ofloxacin (200 mg): A second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, effectively killing Gram-negative and Gram-positive aerobic bacteria.

  • Ornidazole (500 mg): A nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and anaerobic antibacterial agent that damages DNA chains in protozoa and anaerobic bacteria, preventing them from multiplying.

Critical Safety Guidelines & Precautions

  • Alcohol Warning: Patients should avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after stopping Ornilox, as nitroimidazoles like ornidazole can induce nausea, flushing, rapid heartbeat, and abdominal cramps.

  • Tendonitis & CNS Precautions: Ofloxacin carries warnings for tendonitis, tendon rupture (especially the Achilles tendon), peripheral neuropathy, and potential central nervous system stimulation.

  • Chelation & Absorption: Do not take Ornilox simultaneously with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, iron supplements, zinc multivitamins, or calcium-rich products, as they impair ofloxacin absorption. Separate dosing by at least 2 hours.
