Aquaclav is a potent combination prescription antibiotic formulated to treat a wide spectrum of bacterial infections. It combines amoxicillin—a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic that prevents bacterial cell wall synthesis—with clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate), a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Clavulanic acid neutralizes the beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, protecting amoxicillin from degradation and allowing it to eradicate infections that ordinary amoxicillin cannot overcome.

Primary Medical Indications

Aquaclav is prescribed for pediatric and adult patients to treat mild to severe bacterial infections, including:

• Respiratory Tract Infections: Acute bacterial sinusitis, tonsillitis, otitis media (middle ear infection), bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia.

• Urinary Tract & Renal Infections: Uncomplicated and complicated cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis.

• Skin & Soft Tissue Infections: Cellulitis, boils, wound infections, and post-surgical site infections.

• Dental & Oral Infections: Severe dental abscesses and periodontitis with localized spreading.

• Bone & Joint Infections: Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis caused by susceptible beta-lactamase-producing strains.

• Hypersensitivity Warning: Strictly contraindicated in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to amoxicillin, penicillins, or cephalosporins.

• Liver Function: Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment; contraindicated in individuals with a history of Aquaclav-associated jaundice or liver toxicity.

• Complete the Full Course: Patients must complete the full prescribed treatment duration, even if symptoms resolve early, to avoid antibiotic resistance.

• Bacterial Specificity: Active exclusively against bacterial pathogens; it is ineffective against viral illnesses such as flu or the common cold.
