Zentel is a well-known global brand name for Albendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic (anti-worm) medication originally developed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). It is widely used to treat and manage intestinal and tissue-dwelling worm infections in both adults and children.

Active Ingredient & Mechanism of Action

  • Active Ingredient: Albendazole.
  • Mechanism: Albendazole targets parasitic worms by binding to their internal $\beta$-tubulin proteins. This prevents the synthesis of microtubules required for the parasite’s intestinal cells, inhibiting glucose absorption. As a result, the worm suffers energy depletion, becomes immobilized, and is eliminated from the host body.

Formulations & Strengths

Zentel is commercially available in oral dosage forms designed for easy administration:
  • Tablets: 200 mg (often supplied in packs of 2) or 400 mg chewable/swallowable tablets.
  • Oral Suspension: 200 mg / 5 mL or 400 mg / 20 mL liquid formulation, ideal for young children.

Indications

Zentel is effective against a variety of parasitic organisms:
  • Common Intestinal Nematodes (Single-Dose Indications):
    • Roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides)
    • Hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus)
    • Pinworms / Threadworms (Enterobius vermicularis)
    • Whipworms (Trichuris trichiura)
  • Complex / Multi-Day Infections:
    • Strongyloidiasis and Tapeworms (Taenia spp.)
    • Giardiasis in children (often a 5-day course)
    • Cutaneous larva migrans
  • Systemic Tissue Parasites: Hydatid disease (Echinococcus) and Neurocysticercosis (pork tapeworm infection in the brain).

Standard Dosing Overview

  • For Roundworm, Hookworm, Pinworm, and Whipworm:
    • Adults and Children over 2 years: 400 mg as a single dose.
    • Children 1 to 2 years: 200 mg as a single dose.
  • How to Take:
    • For intestinal worms, it can be taken on an empty stomach or with water/food. Tablets may be chewed, swallowed whole, or crushed for young children.
    • For systemic/tissue infections, Zentel should be taken with a fatty meal to significantly increase absorption into the bloodstream.

Safety Profile & Contraindications

  • Side Effects: Usually minimal for short-term single doses. May include mild abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, or temporary elevation of liver enzymes.
  • Pregnancy Warning: Zentel is contraindicated in pregnancy (teratogenic risk). Women of childbearing potential should verify they are not pregnant before taking it (ideally administering it during the first week of a normal menstrual cycle).
  • Neurocysticercosis Warning: Treating undetected central nervous system parasites can cause severe inflammatory reactions in the brain as the worms die. Medical evaluation is recommended prior to treating systemic signs.
Note: Zentel is a regulated anthelmintic medication. Proper diagnosis, dosing for specific age groups, and treatment monitoring should be performed under professional healthcare guidance.
