Nebule

SKU: RKMNF66RZ
Brand: Rickmen Pharmaceuticals
Available Variations
A Nebule (or nebuliser ampoule) is a small, single-dose plastic container pre-filled with a sterile liquid medication designed specifically for use in a nebuliser machine.

Unlike pressurised inhalers that spray a quick puff, a nebule’s liquid contents are poured into a nebuliser cup, where an air compressor or mesh device converts the liquid into a fine mist that is continuously inhaled through a face mask or mouthpiece.

Common Types of Medications in Nebules

Nebules are formulated across several drug classes depending on the respiratory condition being treated:
  • Short-Acting Bronchodilators (SABAs):
    • Example: Salbutamol (Ventolin) or Terbutaline.
    • Purpose: Rapidly opens tight airways during severe asthma attacks or COPD exacerbations.
  • Anticholinergics / Muscarinic Antagonists (SAMAs):
    • Example: Ipratropium Bromide (Atrovent).
    • Purpose: Relaxes smooth muscles around larger airways and reduces mucus production. Often combined with Salbutamol (e.g., Combivent / Duolin nebules).
  • Inhaled Corticosteroids (ICS):
    • Example: Budesonide (Pulmicort Respules).
    • Purpose: Reduces underlying airway inflammation and swelling, commonly used for chronic asthma or croup in children.
  • Mucolytics & Hypertonic Saline:
    • Example: Acetylcysteine or 3%–7% Hypertonic Saline.
    • Purpose: Thins and loosens thick, sticky mucus in conditions like cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis.

Key Advantages of Nebules

  • No Breathing Coordination Needed: Ideal for infants, young children, elderly patients, or individuals who are unconscious, severely fatigued, or unable to coordinate their breath with a standard inhaler.
  • High Drug Delivery in Severe Emergencies: Delivers a continuous flow of high-dose medication during moderate-to-severe respiratory distress or status asthmaticus.
  • Preservative-Free Units: Single-use plastic ampoules eliminate the need for chemical preservatives, minimizing airway irritation.

How to Use a Nebule

1.Prepare the Device:

Wash your hands thoroughly. Connect the nebuliser compressor tubing to the base of the clean medication cup.
2.Open and Fill:

Detach one single nebule from the strip. Twist off the top plastic tab and squeeze the entire liquid contents into the nebuliser cup chamber.
3.Assemble & Position:

Screw the cap onto the nebuliser cup securely and attach the face mask or mouthpiece. Place the mask over the nose and mouth (or place the mouthpiece between teeth with lips sealed).
4.Inhale the Mist:

Turn on the compressor machine. Sit upright and breathe in slowly and deeply through your mouth until the liquid is exhausted and the machine begins to sputter (typically 5 to 15 minutes).
5.Clean Up:

Discard the empty plastic nebule. If using steroid nebules (such as Budesonide), rinse the mouth and wash the face to prevent oral thrush or skin irritation.

Safety Profile & Handling Precautions

  • Single-Use Only: Once opened, a nebule must be used immediately. Any leftover liquid in the ampoule must be discarded, as it lacks preservatives and can quickly breed bacteria.
  • Do Not Ingest or Inject: Nebules contain liquid that resembles oral solutions or intravenous drops, but they are strictly formulated for inhalation only.
  • Systemic Side Effects: High-dose bronchodilator nebules (like Salbutamol) carry a higher likelihood of causing transient side effects such as rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), fine hand tremors, and restlessness compared to standard inhaler puffs.
