Cetroxol is a broad-spectrum, second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic containing cefuroxime (as cefuroxime axetil for oral administration). It works by binding to essential penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and causing osmotic instability and cell lysis. Cetroxol exhibits high stability against many bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, making it effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, including strains resistant to penicillin and ampicillin.
Primary Medical Indications
Cetroxol is prescribed for adult and pediatric patients to treat mild, moderate, and severe bacterial infections, including:
-
Respiratory Tract Infections: Community-acquired pneumonia, acute bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis.
-
ENT Infections: Acute bacterial sinusitis and acute otitis media (middle ear infection).
-
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Uncomplicated and complicated cystitis, pyelonephritis, and urethritis.
-
Skin & Soft Tissue Infections: Uncomplicated skin infections, cellulitis, impetigo, and pyoderma.
-
Lyme Disease: Treatment of early Lyme disease (erythema migrans) in adults and pediatric patients over 12 years of age.

Important Safety & Clinical Precautions
-
Penicillin & Cephalosporin Cross-Reactivity: Use with extreme caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy; strictly contraindicated in individuals with a history of severe, immediate hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis) to cephalosporins or penicillins.
-
Food Enhancement: Unlike many antibiotics, oral absorption of cefuroxime axetil is significantly enhanced when taken immediately after a meal.
-
Stomach Acid Reducers: Drugs that reduce stomach acid (e.g., antacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors) can decrease the bioavailability and effectiveness of Cetroxol; avoid concurrent use or separate administration times.
-
Target Specificity: Cetroxol treats bacterial pathogens only and is completely ineffective against viral infections such as influenza, colds, or COVID-19.
