Pure Eyes OTC Eye Drops (Sterile Eye Drops)
In standard over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, Pure Eyes (manufactured by Samson Pharmaceutical) is a combination redness-relieving and lubricating eye drop.
Active Ingredients & How They Work
-
Naphazoline Hydrochloride (0.01%): A fast-acting ocular vasoconstrictor ($\alpha$-adrenergic agonist). It constricts swollen blood vessels on the white of the eye (conjunctiva), quickly clearing up eye redness.
-
Glycerin (0.25%): A demulcent/lubricant that seals in moisture, soothing burning, dryness, and scratchy sensations caused by environmental irritants.
Common Indications
-
Relief of eye redness due to minor irritations (smog, wind, swimming pool chlorine, or dust).
-
Temporary relief of dry, tired, or burning eyes.
Important Warnings
-
The 72-Hour Rule: Do not use continuously for more than 3 consecutive days. Overusing naphazoline can cause rebound hyperæmia (rebound redness), where the eye’s blood vessels desensitize and dilate even wider, making redness worse.
-
Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before applying. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
-
Narrow-Angle Glaucoma: Do not use if you have narrow-angle glaucoma without consulting an eye specialist.
