Active Ingredient & Mechanism of Action

• Active Ingredient: Hypromellose (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) 0.3% w/v.
• Mechanism: Hypromellose is a hydrophilic visco-elastic polymer that acts as a synthetic substitute for natural tears. It binds to water on the ocular surface, stabilizing the tear film and creating a protective, lubricating layer across the cornea and conjunctiva to prevent rapid tear evaporation.

Key Clinical Indications

• Dry Eye Syndrome: Dryness and burning resulting from reduced natural tear production (keratoconjunctivitis sicca).
• Digital Eye Strain: Fatigue, grittiness, or dryness caused by prolonged computer, phone, or TV screen use (which reduces normal blink rate).
• Environmental Irritation: Eye discomfort triggered by air conditioning, wind, smoke, dust, or dry heating environments.
• Hard Contact Lens Discomfort: Soothing ocular surface friction (though specific lens removal rules apply).

Administration & Dosage Guidelines

• Standard Dosing: Instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) 3 to 4 times daily as needed, or as recommended by an eye care professional.
• Application Steps:
  1. Wash hands thoroughly before opening the bottle.
  2. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and squeeze 1 drop inside.
  3. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelid, or fingers to keep the solution sterile.
  4. Close your eyes gently for 1 to 2 minutes after instillation.

Safety Precautions & Important Warnings

• Contact Lens Safety: Melotears contains Benzalkonium Chloride as a preservative. Soft contact lenses can absorb this preservative, potentially causing corneal irritation or discoloration of the lenses.
  • Rule: Remove soft contact lenses before applying drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
• 28-Day Discard Rule: Discard the bottle 4 weeks (28 days) after opening, even if solution remains, to prevent bacterial contamination.
• Temporary Vision Blurring: Expect mild, transient blurring of vision immediately following application. Do not drive or operate machinery until vision becomes completely clear.
• When to Seek Care: Discontinue use and consult a physician if you experience eye pain, persistent redness, vision changes, or if dry eye symptoms persist beyond 72 hours.
