Danacid (manufactured by Dana Pharmaceuticals) is an over-the-counter antacid and anti-flatulent formulation widely used to relieve symptoms of stomach hyperacidity, acid reflux, heartburn, and gas bloating.
Like other combination antacids (such as Gestid or Maalox), it is designed to neutralize excess gastric acid quickly while breaking down trapped gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract.

Active Ingredients & How It Works

Danacid combines three complementary active ingredients:
  1. Aluminium Hydroxide: A slow-acting antacid that neutralizes existing stomach acid to provide sustained relief. (Can tend to cause mild constipation).
  2. Magnesium Hydroxide / Magnesium Trisilicate: A fast-acting antacid that neutralizes gastric acid quickly. (Can tend to have a mild laxative effect).
  3. Simethicone: An anti-foaming agent that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, causing them to coalesce into larger bubbles that are easily eliminated through belching or passing gas.
Combining aluminium and magnesium salts helps balance their respective bowel effects (constipation vs. diarrhea) to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.

Available Dosage Forms

  • Oral Suspension (Liquid): Mint-flavored liquid packaged in 100 mL or 200 mL bottles. Liquid antacids generally provide faster, more uniform coating and acid neutralization than solid tablets.
  • Chewable Tablets: Packaged in blister packs for portable convenience.

Common Clinical Indications

Danacid is used for the symptomatic management of:
  • Heartburn and acid indigestion.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and acid regurgitation.
  • Gastritis and discomfort associated with peptic or duodenal ulcers.
  • Flatulence, fullness, and abdominal bloating caused by trapped gas.

Administration & Dosage Guidelines

  • Oral Suspension: Shake the bottle thoroughly before each dose to ensure uniform drug distribution.
  • Chewable Tablets: Must be chewed completely before swallowing; do not swallow them whole. Follow with a glass of water.
  • Typical Dosing:
    • Suspension: 10 to 20 mL (2 to 4 teaspoonfuls) taken 20 to 60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, or as symptoms occur.
    • Tablets: 1 to 2 tablets chewed as symptoms arise, up to 4 times daily.
  • The “2-Hour Separation” Rule: Antacids bind to many prescription medications in the digestive tract, preventing their absorption. Always space Danacid at least 2 hours apart from other drugs (such as antibiotics like tetracyclines/fluoroquinolones, iron supplements, digoxin, and levothyroxine).

Safety Profile & Considerations

  • Renal Impairment Caution: Patients with severe kidney failure should avoid prolonged use of aluminium- and magnesium-containing antacids, as these metals can accumulate in the bloodstream and cause toxicity.
  • Common Side Effects: Generally well tolerated; occasional minor changes in bowel habits (mild diarrhea or constipation).
  • Usage Limit: Should not be used continuously for more than 10 to 14 days without medical evaluation. Chronic heartburn or stomach pain may indicate a underlying conditions like severe peptic ulcer disease or H. pylori infection.
